To ensure the safety of its passengers, the Ride-hailing Uber service fully utilizes the option of providing a personal identification number (PIN) code to their driver to ensure that they do not enter the wrong vehicle.
Uber PIN Code: How To Know If Travel Is Guaranteed
U.S. passengers and Canada can now enable this feature to run in the Settings menu of the Uber app, which requires a PIN confirmation for all rides, or at a specific time of day – such as a night commute from 9pm to 6am, Engadget pointed out.
If the feature is enabled, the journey cannot begin unless the driver enters the code before the passenger enters the vehicle and provides The Uber PIN Code verbally. If the PIN code is the same as the driver app, the passenger will receive a notification notification. “Your ride is guaranteed.” However, this is a voluntary feature only for users who enable it.
How to Create a PIN Code in the Uber App
1. Make sure your Uber app is the latest version. If not, update it.
2. While in the app, go to Settings and select Confirm your ride.
3. Select “Use PIN to confirm ride” to unlock it.
4. Then, select if you want the PIN code security feature enabled “All Rides” or “Night Only.”
5. Then select Done.
New Uber Safety Measures Over Student Death
The new feature comes after the death of 21-year-old student Samantha “Sam” Josephson, who was killed in March last year after riding in the car of a man posing as an Uber driver. Josephson’s body was later found in the woods, about 40 miles [65 km] from his car.
In the wake of that horrific massacre, U.S. states have demanded further safety requirements from Uber drivers, reports the Chicago Tribune. Josephson County, New Jersey needed Uber, Lyft or other passenger equipment to display identification signs in the front window of their car and in the rear window. At the moment, lighted signs are an obligation in North Carolina for Uber or Lyft drivers to show up.

In addition to the PIN code, Uber passengers can view the license plate, design and vehicle model.
Uber had long warned passengers to regularly check and verify the number plate and design and model of vehicles before boarding. However, some riders ignore such riding information, increasing the risks to their safety. Since Josephson’s death, Uber has been reminding passengers about carefully checking that car data, which is available in the app when booking a ride.
With a PIN code, another layer of security is provided to ensure that passengers praise the correct vehicle.
Uber and rival Lyft have been experiencing security issues with their services. In December last year, Uber revealed that 464 people had been raped while using the passenger car service from 2017 to 2018. Lyft has faced legal action against women who say the company did not address their grievances against their drivers.
On the other hand, a bill has been introduced in the U.S. Congress. which, in turn, may require riders to submit quick response (QR) codes that a passenger can scan with a smartphone to confirm the ride, reports Chicago Trubune. It also prohibits the production and sale of Uber and Lyft brands, unless those are from private travel companies.
