Let’s talk about The loss meme. There was a comic in the video game webcomic series Ctrl+Alt+Del where the female lead had an abortion. In four panels, we see the main man arriving at the hospital, getting the news, and going to see her. Of course, abortions are not funny. But the series itself is supposed to be a comedy, and fans felt that the drastic tonal shift was inappropriate for the series.
Naturally, when they took the meme, they saw it as an overly dramatic and unsubstantiated turn of events that became known as the loss meme. This strip has been mocked since it was posted in 2008, which means that the loss meme is probably one of the oldest. Other webcomics mocked it as well.
But is the loss meme overdone? We can’t tell, but people can still be pretty smart about it after ten years. Here are some of our recent favorites.
When math goes meme
Once you dive into the world of loss memes, you’ll see it everywhere. It will never, ever leave you. At all. And then someone has to connect it with math? Of course, this gets someone on Tumblr mad.
Cyclical nature of the loss
When someone posts loss memes a little too much, it sends you into a “when will it end” spiral. Of course, there’s also a chance you’ll create a losing meme yourself in the process.
A losing combination
When you google “loss meme” you get loss memes and weight loss memes. So naturally, it’s time to combine the two.

it’s learning
Over the years, the losing meme has grown and evolved throughout the year. When it will be included in new memes, especially the ones with four panels. Like the Drake meme. It will never leave you.
To feel regret
Cue the girl who was somehow brought into this meme pose of loss but doesn’t want to be here. Hide your shame.
. . . Stonehenge? How did it infect Stonehenge?
Siri, play the X-Files theme song and call David Duchovny. Thanks.
Give it a minute
There are five losses that everyone hates, don’t you agree?
